Subhadip Roy (29), a Ph.D. Scholar of IISER Kolkata, has committed suicide in his Lab .

On the condition of anonymity, a PhD scholar from IISc stated that some principal investigators harass students by delaying PhD completion even after publication of a paper. “They force students to repeat experiments until they get the desired result.” “This is more depressing students than the lack of funding,” said a PhD scholar.

The first suicide in IISc this year occurred on March 2, when a 34-year-old PhD student Rishabh Mishram, took his own life. He, too, was depressed. Rishabh Mishram, a Rajasthan native in his fourth semester of BS Research, was killed in the Tuesday night March 2, incident. Now after those cases this 4 April case of Subhadip Roy shocked the whole science community in India.

A final-year researcher of the integrated PhD programme at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, was found dead inside a laboratory on the Mohanpur campus on Monday.The body of Subhadip Roy, 29, a researcher in solid-state physics, was found lying on the laboratory floor, said sources at IISER.

According to a senior police officer, he was discovered hanging in his room around 10.30 p.m. The IISc administration notified Sadashivnagar police, who rushed to the scene and shifted the body for postmortem examination, as well as informing his parents. The police discovered no suicide note at the scene, and a case of unnatural death was registered based on a complaint from management, and investigations are ongoing.
